Books are not a destination in themselves, but rather a vehicle to a destination. --Susanna Richards
3rd, 4th , and 5th grade GT Language Arts students along with other high achieving students at Olander will have their needs met through out Language Arts Summit program. Students will receive differentiated instruction within the classroom in the area of language arts. Classroom novels and reading selections will be differentiated to meet students at their instructional level. These richer texts will challenge the student to attain a higher level of comprehension and generate deeper discussion about topics relating reading to real-world issues. LA Summit students are a part of a small group of intellectual peers that is required to discuss reading in great depth, stretch understanding of text and connect via open ended assignments. Student will be encouraged to challenge him/herself when choosing independent reading materials and during writing. For 4th and 5th grade students, Language Arts Summit also includes a pull-out enrichment with intellectual peers. The group will focus on further developing strategies for close reading. We’ll take the strategies and apply them during our rich literature circle discussions and/or Socratic Seminars. We’ll also dedicate our time to unraveling the secrets of language through our study of Greek and Latin roots and dig into analogies. We'll enrich core writing instruction through narrative, expository, and poetry prompts. Be sure to check out the extra opportunities page for writing contest opportunities.
